John Ruggieri is an award-winning, multi-talented artist, photographer, creative director, and designer producing both public and private work for companies, collectors, and institutions. Using both traditional and new media, his art has been exhibited since 1991 at galleries and museums such as Schoolhouse Center (Provincetown), Bernard Toale Gallery (Boston), LFL Gallery (New York), and many others. His design work includes global branding projects for IBM.
His work is included in collections internationally. Awards include those from the New England Foundation for the Arts and the Copley Society of Art in Boston. He has taught or been a visiting artist with various schools and museums, including the Fuller Museum of Art (Brockton, MA), Provincetown Art Association & Museum, and the Rhode Island School of Design.
He is a creative professional and dynamic thinker, and spreads his time among working on projects and exhibitions, traveling to reenergize his inspirations and motivations, teaching others, and writing from his experience. He has an established reputation for working with a variety of artists, designers, photographers, and creative directors on public art, exhibition, and design projects. John is also a published art writer, curator, and educator.
In 1994, he founded Abstraction Made Elementary, a nonprofit corporation featured in Newsweek and the Boston Globe that provides portable contemporary art programs for underserved youth, linking accomplished artists, children, and their shared community in education, exhibition, and public art programs.
AME, under John's artistic direction, was awarded a $30,000 grant from the Fund for the Arts, a restricted fund of the New England Foundation for the Arts for the multimedia public art project ART@NIGHT in 2000. He was a finalist for the $30,000 Echoing Green Fellowship for social entrepreneurs.
He has attracted major event and program sponsors and partners, including IBM, Zipcar, Design Within Reach, Bain Capital, Modern Postcard, Harvard University Art Museums, Harvard Graduate School of Education, WBCN-FM, Wainwright Bank & Trust Company, Boston Private Bank & Trust Company, Boston Red Sox, Boston Magazine’s Home & Garden, and Improper Bostonian Magazine.
John holds a B.A. in painting and philosophy from Hampshire College and is also an alumnus of the Rhode Island School of Design. He lives and works in his loft in Boston's South End.
